Cencosud S.A. (Argentina and Chile)

Our goal in Cencosud was to achieve a total flexibility for the opening of new stores or operation centers, allowing a fast deployment of multiple work positions. In addition, Cencosud obtained an important reduction of its TCO mantaining -and even improving- the existing applications and resources. PXES Enterprise Edition has been implemented in 30 stores of Easy (home improvement chain) and Jumbo (supermarket chain) with a server farm (Windows 2000) hosted in Argentina which provide a Windows 2000 desktop to approximately 2000 work positions deployed en different cities of both countries. The cities where the solution is working are: Buenos Aires city roundabout (multiple locations), San Juan, Cordoba, Rosario, Santiago de Chile (multiple locations), Quilin, Temuco, Curico, Talca, Chillan, Los Angeles, Linares, Osorno. The communications protocol is Microsoft Terminal Services using RDP. The working applications are: ERP SAP, Business Warehouse from SAP, the Office suite, several proprietary applications of the stores, Internet Explorer. The used communication links are transparent, 384 kbps. VPN and ISDN backups.

Acadia University (Canada)

The University has 4500 Dell laptops for students and faculty. There was a higher than average rate of failure on the hard drives. Dell wanted to replace all of the hard drives with a different brand. However Dell offered no solution for how to preserve data from the old drive and place it on the new drive. The University's Computing Services group deployed PXES to make a simple Linux shell within a network boot which ran a script to dump the data from the old disk to the new disk.

It took only 24 minutes to copy 40 GB of data, regardless of what partitions and OS the user had, from disk to disk. A similar solution was used to wipe the old disks of data before returning them to Dell. The project completed quickly and at very little cost.

Reynox (Argentina)

Reynox, IT Services company, through its HHRR division has worked in joint with PXES - with Diego Torres Milano in particular- in order to provide IT resources for different implementations and common clients.

Problematic: Nowadays it´s difficult to get highly qualified systems professionals with deep knowledge regarding new technologies and motivated for research, the reason why PXES trusted Reynox for this purpose, and Reynox has been successful in finding a solid team of work able to respond to these demands in a very short time.

The professionals mentioned above had outstanding skills regarding open sistems, perl, C, shell and Linux, besides having an excellent level of competency english, indispensable for a good professional performance.

Our problem is that cost reductions forces us to keep our investments in computers to a minimum and we have to lengthen the use of each computer. They started out as thick clients and after 3 years they ended up as thin clients. PXES Thin Client made reuse of old 200 Mhz computers possible in a windows 2003 terminal server environment. Installing the client software took no time (5 computers in 1 hour) and the users feel that they have new equipment installed, with shortened bootup-times and the look and feel of a windows xp-client from the terminal server.

Deutsche Bundesbank (Germany)

The workstation computers in the Deutsche Bundesbank’s branches will be migrated to a new system basis – BASIS TC (Bundesbank Arbeitsplatz Services für Inbetriebnahme und Softwarebereitstellung Thin Client (Bundesbank workstation services for the operation and software provisioning of thin client)) – as part of the EFI (Ersatzinvestition Filialinfrastruktur (branch infrastructure replacement investment)) project. This system is based on PXES Universal Linux Thin Client in combination with Citrix Presentation Server.

Coastal Resource Sharing Network (USA)

"As a systems manager for a public library consortium, I must work within a very modest IT budget. So, the CULT universal Linux thin client project has been of great benefit to me.

With CULT, I've been able to re-use my older hardware to create thin client-based public catalog workstations.

With CULT's PXE network booting capabilities, I can configure the older workstations to boot from the network, and straight into a Terminal Services session.

This configuration ensures a secure, consistent, trouble-free workstation experience for the user, at a very low cost solution, and with less support work for me."
